We need slate roof tiles! - Update
After several years to obtain a faculty and serious fund raising, we have started the work on making the chancel area watertight.
Through kind donations we have already raised £50,000, which would have been just enough to get the work completed.
But then...
...as the slate roof tiles were lifted off the north aspect of the roof- many of them crumbled in the workman’s hands!
The tiles had taken such a battering from the weather over the years.
We now require about fifty tiles, ranging in size from small square ones to some which are one metre in length! We have sourced them and the cost ranges from £250 for a large one to £30 for a small one.
In total we need another £4,000.
If you are a member of the church or village Facebook sites you will have seen the photographs. Do keep looking on this website which has the full story. We have had a good response so far to the appeal and the PCC are most grateful. If you would like to contribute to our slate appeal, please do. It could be a very original early Christmas gift - this building is part of the heritage of our village church and community.
We intend to acknowledge the generosity of all our contributors with some sort of plaque listing their names.
The bank details are:

Or please contact the church warden or any member of the PCC.
27.11.25 the response has been tremendous and we have the new tiles safely located on the roof of the chancel. They are a good match and will hopefully ensure the rain water will stay outside of the church.
Now that aspect of the project has been completed the workmen have been busy pointing the stone work. Another job was repairing the apex stone right at the top of the roof. The old metal lightening conductor had corroded and cause the stone to split. Our crafts men have pinned and sealed the stone and a new copper conductor fitted. The lightening conductor has been tested and has passed, so should protect us from any lightening strikes.
The scaffolding will be coming down next week and we can then start getting ready to celebrate Christmas.
It’s been quite a journey from applying for a faculty, searching for grants, gathering in donations from supporters and fund raising. It’s so rewarding now that we can see the results. The villagers and supporters have been so supportive and we are so grateful. St James, will stand for a few more years as the heart and soul of the village of Salt.
Thank you
