About Us

Welcome to St Mary the Virgin, set in peaceful and beautiful surroundings in a fold of the South Downs National Park near Arundel.  There is evidence of pre-conquest construction in our church, but most of the building is early 12th century onwards. Across the river Arun, the imposing ramparts of Arundel castle, the seat for centuries of the Dukes of Norfolk, suggest that this peaceful corner of Sussex has witnessed many historic events in the history of England. Primarily though, St Mary's has been a place of worship and a place for quiet contemplation and rest for the soul over the centuries and remains so now. You are welcome to visit and spend time enjoying both the beauty of the building and the opportunity for quiet contemplation and prayer. And, of course, you are welcome to join us for any of our services of worship. Please check the events diary on this website for details. We also welcome enquiries for baptisms ( christenings), confirmation and weddings and other special life-events you might wish to celebrate or mark in a church service. Please contact our vicar, Reverend Celia Woodruff for further information.

The church is usually open during daylight hours. If you are planning a special visit, we suggest you email us in advance to avoid disappointment.
