About Us
Welcome to Christ Church, part of the Mortlake with East Sheen team ministry.
Christ Church is a liberal and inclusive church welcoming all ages and providing a space on a Sunday and during the week in which people can explore faith and ask questions.
We have an active music department, Messy Church and St Nicholas children's chapel, and we also have an active ministry to seniors. All ages are welcome at Christ Church, which is a place of prayer, music and community offering a chance to worship for all.
The best way to find out about us is to visit or come along to a service.
History
An early work of the architect Arthur Blomfield, and his assistant (the writer) Thomas Hardy, the church building was erected between 1862 and 1864. It was built on farmland at the entrance of East Sheen Common. It was originally planned to be opened in April 1863; however, the tower collapsed shortly before completion and had to be rebuilt. The church was finally completed and consecrated nine months later, on 13 January 1864. The church has been Grade II listed with English Heritage since 1983.
Christ Church is usually open every day from 9.00am to around 6.00pm to pray, contemplate or just to sit in peace.
As a church we are committed to inclusion, racial & social justice and many of our members are active in local community groups. We have a special link with the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe being twinned with St Mary Famona, Bulawayo, in the Diocese of Matabeleland.
If you live in the area of the parish covered by the church we hope you will feel we are “your” church and we are always happy to talk with you about a wedding, baptism or funeral in church or any other matter which concerns you.
