Christ Church Cathedral Choir and acclaimed chamber orchestra Britten Sinfonia join forces for James Macmillan's 'Seven Last Words from the Cross' in this year's Choral Meditation for Holy Week. Commissioned by the BBC in 1994, this work presents the last seven sentences uttered by Christ in the four gospels. Interspersed between the movements are addresses from The Revd Canon Peter Moger, helping us to delve more deeply into the theological and musical content of the piece. As always, the Choral Meditation for Holy Week is presented as an act of worship, and a gift to the people of the city and Diocese of Oxford. Therefore, entrance is free, and no booking is required.

Our evening worship Wednesday in Holy Week features Philip Moore's 'Via Crucis', performed by our Sub-Organist Richard Moore. The Via Crucis, or the Way of the Cross, is a devotional practice based on the path Jesus walked on his journey from condemnation to crucifixion. This inspired Eric Milner-White's 'A Procession of Passion Prayers (1950)', which are realised in music this evocative work. The Revd Canon Peter Moger will also give an address during this service as part of our Holy Week Series. This performance is offered as an act of worship; therefore, entrance is free and no booking is required.

Our Bishops, clergy and Licensed Lay Ministers will also renew their ordination and licensing promises and affirm their belief and ministry. The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday

Occurring
for 1 hour
Venue
Christ Church Cathedral
Address
St Aldate's Oxford, OX1 1DP, United Kingdom

Join us as we begin the 'sacred triduum' (the special three day cycle of services remembering the betrayal, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus) with the traditional remembrance of the Last Supper. The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the final act of the Passion narrative. We remember Jesus and his disciples celebrating together the Passover, before Jesus goes to the garden of Gethsemane. The service ends in silence with the altars and sanctuary stripped of their vestments. You are invited to witness this and remain in the Cathedral until midnight if you wish. If you would like to participate in the washing of feet, please email the Succentor at [email protected].

The Watch

Occurring
for 2 hours, 59 mins
Venue
Christ Church Cathedral
Address
St Aldate's Oxford, OX1 1DP, United Kingdom

Like the disciples, we keep silent vigil in the night with Jesus, following our remembrance of the Last Supper. Christ is symbolized by the consecrated bread on the altar of the Lady Chapel, while greenery placed around reminds us of the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus awaited his arrest. The Cathedral will be open until midnight - simply ask at the Lodge on St Aldates and you will be admitted. You are very welcome to join us in reflection as we prepare for Good Friday.

The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday

Occurring

On the morning of Good Friday, we gather to remember the Passion of Jesus. The service begins in the same silence that was kept through the night. We hear the story of Jesus' crucifixion and death, with a sung Passion Gospel. A great cross, representing the cross on which Jesus suffered and died, becomes a symbol of the paradox of Good Friday: that through suffering, God brings healing and hope to all.
