In the story of Jesus’ life, he had supper with his friends on the night before he died on the cross. At this supper, he told them to share bread and wine to remember him. Ever since, Christians have gathered together in the same way to celebrate the mystery of our faith.

Christians have many names for this celebration – the Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, the Mass, Holy Communion – but whatever we choose to call it, it remains at the centre of all our worship. The main celebration of the Eucharist at St. Clement's – on a Sunday, at 11am – is the high point of our weekly worship, engaging the senses with sound, colour and movement. This service includes choral music, hymn singing and a sermon, and lasts around 90 minutes. Visit www.anglican.cz for more information

Midnight Mass

The tradition of a midnight Vigil on the eve of Christmas began in the East, and was observed in the late fourth century in Jerusalem. The tradition reached the Western world in the year 430 under Pope Sixtus III in the Basilica of St Mary Major. By the twelfth century, the practice of midnight Mass had become more widespread as all priests had been granted the faculty of celebrating three Masses on Christmas Day (previously reserved to the Pope). Midnight Mass is the first liturgy of Christmastide that is celebrated on the night of Christmas Eve, traditionally beginning or culminating at midnight when Christmas Eve gives way to Christmas Day. This popular Christmas custom is a jubilant celebration of the mass or service of worship in honour of the Nativity of Jesus; even many of those Christian denominations that do not regularly employ the word mass uniquely use the term "Midnight Mass" for their Christmas Eve liturgy as it includes the celebration of Holy Communion.

The origins of Evening Prayer date back to Christian and Jewish prayers at the end of the day and the shape of Evening Prayer was first set by the great Reformation Martyr Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in the first Book of Common Prayer (1549), based on the Catholic offices (daily services) of Vespers and Compline. Join us and participate in an intense, timeless act of worship that has entranced Anglicans by its simplicity and uplifting language for over three and a half centuries.
