Searching for Robert Boyd is a play about a young Irishman who came to Málaga in pursuit of an ideal: freedom. In December 1831, he joined the Spanish liberal general José María Torrijos in an ill-fated attempt to overthrow the absolutist regime of King Ferdinand VII and restore constitutional government to Spain. The expedition ended in betrayal, capture and execution on the beach at San Andrés.
Following his execution, Robert Boyd’s body was recovered by the British consul, William Mark, and buried in Málaga’s newly established English Cemetery, not far from what is now St George's Church. The cemetery had been founded only the previous year and was the first Protestant cemetery in Spain where non-Catholics could be buried. His grave remains here today.
Searching for Robert Boyd, was written and directed by Miguel Beltrán. It brings Boyd’s remarkable story back to life, exploring the man behind one of the most dramatic episodes in Málaga’s history.
