St Cyriac

A warm welcome awaits you from the congregation of Lacock with Bowden Hill churches. We are a small but growing congregation looking to serve God in our local community. This includes links with our residents, school, the National Trust and the many visitors who come and visit us every year.

Our services are generally informal and easy to follow and understand. We have a broad range of ages attending our church and aim to accomodate all. Our church is popular for weddings and other events and we will look into our records for you if you are interested in family history.

We also allow well behaved dogs and cats in our services so you don’t need to leave your faithful friend at home!

If you are looking for a warm welcome and a warm church come and give us a try. It does not matter if you have never been to church before there is a place for you to join with us and be part of a worshipping community who seek to put love at our centre.

St. Cyriac is one of 2 Churches in a joint parish of Lacock with St Anne's Bowden Hill. It has also recently become a team with St Peter's Church in Chippenham under the Rev Si Dunn

Walk through the doors of St Cyriac’s and you’re not just visiting a church—you’re travelling through time. From Norman stonework to Victorian touches, this remarkable building carries the fingerprints of centuries: Plantagenet, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and beyond. Look closely and you’ll find clues to the people who shaped this place—those who worshipped here, those who are remembered here, and those whose stories are still waiting to be uncovered.

Explore further and you’ll uncover stories of a lost Tudor tomb, one of England’s earliest Renaissance memorials, and epic tales of naval heroes, scientists—and even traitors. Royal connections thread through the centuries too, with links to Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Charles I and Charles II, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. And yes—there’s even a surprising connection to Thomas the Tank Engine!

St John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist (Gastard) is one of 5 Churches in the team ministry. The others are St. Bartholomew (Corsham), St. Cyriac (Lacock), St. Anne (Bowden Hill) and St. Philip and St. James (Neston).

On Sir Thomas Fowler’s death in the Boer War it was his resolute (somewhat eccentric) sister Jean who for many years managed Gastard House and estate. Whatever her strengths and shortcomings may have been, one action must stand as a lasting tribute: she made possible the erection of St John the Baptist Church, Gastard. Motivated by Christian zeal and a desire to build a memorial to her father, Sir Robert Nicholas, and her brother Sir Thomas, she and her family generously supplemented the nucleus of money obtained from fund raising efforts in the village.

She also donated the plot of land on which the church was erected. On Thursday, 11th July 1912, in the presence of a large company, the formal ceremony of laying the foundation stone took place. Miss Jean Fowler herself laid the cornerstone bearing the date 1912.

St Philip & St James

St Philip and St James is one of 5 Churches in the team ministry. The others are St. Bartholomew (Corsham), St. Cyriac (Lacock), St. Anne (Bowden Hill),and St. John the Baptist (Gastard)

Construction of St Philip and St James’ Church started in 1866, shortly after the adjacent school had opened.

In 1985 a long-awaited scheme to adapt the building for modern needs was finally undertaken (records show that the scheme had first been formally discussed in 1972!), resulting in internal reordering to create a vestibule, kitchen and cloakroom, choir vestry, and a large upstairs meeting room.

St Anne

St. Anne (Bowden Hill) is one of 3 Churches in a recently formed team ministry. The others are St. Cyriac (Lacock) and St. Peter (Chippenham)

Bowden Hill church was built by the elder brother of the Liberal Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
