Church of England Diocese of Gloucester Newnham

St Peter's Church, Newnham-on-Severn

Welcome to St. Peter’s, Newnham on Severn, in the Diocese of Gloucester. We are a church that welcomes people of all ages and abilities, those who have been Christians for a long time and those who are seeking and exploring. Together, we participate in a range of services from very formal to very informal as well as study and lots of social activities. We hope you can find what you are looking for on this site. Do get in touch if you need more information or want to talk anything through.

The first documentary evidence we have of a Christian church in Newnham - actually a chapel of ease - is in 1018 (so we're past the 1,000th anniversary!). It was sited on a tongue of sandstone cliff known as Newnham's Ladder and established as the parish church.  In 1366 a new church building was built on the high ground of the village as the old one faced erosion from the river. The current church is mainly Victorian, although the medieval tower has survived. We've been here a long time and we hope that you can find a place here too and become part of the story of this place with us.
