An emotional Family Service was held by David Bennie on 27th July which celebrated his amazing work over the past 24 years. The Church was filled with so many whose lives had been touched by him and his ministry and wide ranging activities over this time. These covered the “zones” he created, ie Totzone and Craftzone for the children and young people in the parish, as well as the Scouts. His work in starting Forest Church during lockdown and which still thrives today was also mentioned as well as the home groups which he ran.
His 20 year commitment to the communities in The Gambia was covered and celebrated with many who had taken part in these visits present in Church. This work started in 2003 on a nursery school and expanded quickly to take in building other schools. By assembling groups of volunteers with skills this enabling building works to continue. Other projects included installing solar panels to power the pumping of water to community allotments and to other projects. As word spread, he was able to source teaching materials, furniture and computers as UK schools upgraded their equipment, to enable the education system to flourish and change the lives of so many Gambian children. This work will continue.
Collections had been taking place and he was presented with cards, donations and a wildlife camera from us all with our thanks and good wishes for his retirement. Together with Gill, they formed a formidable team, her support has been invaluable. She has agreed to continue as our Administrator and we are most fortunate to have her.
Going forward, Forest Church will continue with a group of parents and volunteers planning and taking these services. The Family Service will now be a Worship Service which welcomes all ages and hopes to include some craft in its content.
Luke 12v32 tells us “Do not fear little Church, for your father has given you the Kingdom”. This certainly seems to speak to us in Leigh and we take encouragement from the many willing volunteers that keep our church and services going. The Archdeacon and Area Dean also encouraged us when we met in early August. Our little church continues to thrive, although we are not perfect like Jesus.
Do join us for our Harvest Festival 28th September when we will all be together in the church.
Many thanks Richard & Linda
