Retirement has always felt like a distant dream, but now that it’s here, I’m feeling all sorts of emotions—a lot of sadness, mixed emotions, but mostly gratitude. Closing this chapter means reflecting on so many wonderful moments, friendships, and, of course, the wonderful send off/s so many gave me. So, I just wanted to take a moment to say a big, heartfelt thank you.
Looking Back on Good Times Thinking about my time at Leigh, it’s not really just about the Church, it’s about the whole community and Parish of Leigh and the many people I’ve had the privilege of knowing and working with. There have been many ‘big’ moments, but it is all the little things that probably stick in the memory, so many private, shared times of fun and laughter, support, jokes and also the sad moments as well. My time in Leigh has encompassed just about every walk of life and the emotions that go with them. Retirement isn’t just about me stepping away; it’s about celebrating the incredible community I’ve been lucky to be part of. The gifts and messages of love you gave me are reminders of all these connections — each one has its own special meaning from the person who gave it.
Kind Words I’ll Never Forget I’m honestly touched by all the thoughtful messages in your cards, bringing back so many memories, which together bring back the story of my 24 years working in the Leigh Community, they’re all pieces of our shared story. Out of everything, the words you shared — whether in cards or in person —mean the most. Some messages made me laugh, others made me a bit misty-eyed, but all of them reminded me of our impact on each other. I’ll treasure every note, every signature, and every wish for my next chapter.
Here’s to What’s Next I’m excited for what’s ahead! Many of you have asked me ‘what will I do with my time?’ Well, those that know me, will have heard me say, many a time, “God Has A Plan”. And He has been revealing His plan for my Ministry to expand my Mission in The Gambia, West Africa, with my/our Charity, Gambian Projects Overseas. Such a lot has changed since the pandemic and God has been slowly revealing His new plan for the charity work we do there. There has been a huge rise in interest in what we do and an expansion of the type of support we give. We already have an exciting team of travellers for our next trip in January 2026 so watch this space. I will be happy to come and give a talk in the church or village hall about this in due course!!
So, This isn’t goodbye; it’s a huge thank you — for the laughs, the wisdom, and the kindness you’ve shared in your support for me and, of course, Gill. As I jump into this new phase, I want to stay connected and keep giving back where I can. I’m looking forward to cheering you all on from the sidelines and maybe even finding new ways for us to cross paths again.
Wrapping Up People say retirement rewards years of hard work, but I think it’s really about all the great things I’ve received from those around me — love, friendship, support, and memories I’ll never forget. Thank you so much for being such a big part of my life.
With All God’s Blessings David Bennie (Retired) Youth & Families Minister. St. Mary’s Church. Leigh
