Church Street

Water, water, everywhere! We are raising money for the church roof and flood barriers.

St Michael’s church is a prominent feature of the village of Mytholmroyd. Our geographical location on the River Calder is beautiful. However, we are prone to flooding when the river bursts it’s banks and when the water makes it into the church and the hall the drying out and the damage causes many months of repair.

We are in the process of putting in flood barriers on the two church doors and the hall doors. The total cost of this will be approximately £14000. We have applied for and received grants for a portion of the cost which will fund most of the church and part of the hall. Church funds unfortunately do not stretch to this vital need. We are doing our usual fund raising of quiz nights, coffee mornings etc. but this will only bring in so much. The hire of hall covers the cost of general ongoing maintenance and cleaning. Therefore we are turning to the wider community for help!

The church hall is used for so much more than just church activities! It is are used by Brownies, several pre-school groups, Amateurs, tea dances, arts festival and of course the Christmas Market and lights switch on just to name a few. It is also available for private lets.

We feel helpless when the village floods because we get flooded ourselves. By having the barriers, we will be hopefully able to open quickly and help to those who are in need.

As well as having water come in through the door when we flood, we also have a leak in the roof of the church which, if left, will cause damage to the interior and the organ. The total estimated cost for this is £15000. We have applied for and received a grant for £9000 but that still leaves us with a further £6000 to fund.

Any donations we receive will only be used for these two projects (flood barriers and roof repairs). Any money raised above and beyond the will be set aside for continued maintenance of the flood barriers or work on the roof.

Although you may or may not attend this church, it and the hall have an important role within the life of Mytholmroyd. Anything you can give, large or small, will be appreciated and will help us keep the buildings available.

You can donate using the donate button on the home page.

Thank you!
