St Oswald’s was filled with some rather unusual members of the congregation as we celebrated Creation Sunday and our Animal Blessing Service.

Alongside their owners came dogs of all shapes and sizes, cats and even tortoises, making for a joyful and occasionally lively service!

Revd Terry Williams spoke about the goodness of God’s whole creation and reminded us that human beings are part of creation, not separate from it. We share the same earth, air and water with all living things.

Terry also reflected on the special place animals have in our lives. Our pets offer companionship without judgement, encourage us to enjoy the simple things and can be a great source of comfort, particularly during difficult times.

Taking up this year’s theme of “Living Water”, he challenged us to consider our own impact on the world. Do our actions help creation to flourish, or do they cause harm? Caring for creation, he said, is not an optional extra but part of our Christian responsibility to love God and our neighbours.

The animals were then blessed as we gave thanks for the companionship, affection and joy they bring, and for the extraordinary diversity of life with which we share God’s creation.
