Service of Healing and Renewal

In this holy season of Eastertide, we find ourselves immersed in the Acts of the Apostles, witnessing the vibrant life of the early Church as it flourished through the power of the Holy Spirit, the breaking of bread, and a profound commitment to prayer.
On Sunday 17th May at 4:30 pm, I invite you to join us at St James the Great, Colchester, to participate in that same apostolic tradition at our Service of Healing and Renewal.
I am particularly delighted to welcome back Fr Peter Walker, former Parish Priest, who will join me in leading this afternoon of devotion.
This liturgy offers a significant opportunity for each person to seek and receive prayer for their specific needs, finding strength in the shared life of our community. Following the Liturgy of the Word and a sermon, we shall move outside to the South side of the church for the Sprinkling of Holy Water. This water, drawn from the Holy Well at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, is a vital element of our rite—a sign of our desire for interior purification and a renewal of our baptismal identity in Christ.
In obedience to the scriptural mandate to pray over the sick, we shall offer the Laying on of Hands and Sacred Unction. Those seeking restoration are invited to be anointed with Holy Oil, consecrated by the Bishop of Richborough at the Chrism Mass.
This anointing serves as an efficacious means of grace, bringing the strengthening presence of the Holy Spirit to both soul and body.
Our devotion culminates in Exposition and Benediction. As we kneel before Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, we abide by the theology of St Thomas Aquinas, venerating the memorial of the Lord’s Passion. In this sacred encounter, the mind is filled with grace, and we receive a pledge of the glory to come.
The St James’ Singers, under the direction of Philip Prior, will enrich our worship with a magnificent selection of hymnody and choral music:
Hymns: There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy, Lord, we come to ask Your healing, and Be still for the presence of the Lord.
Anthems: The polyphonic beauty of Tallis’s If ye love me and Stanford’s O for a closer walk with God.
Organ Voluntary: The service will conclude with the reflective depth of Master Tallis’s Testament by Herbert Howells.
All are welcome to enter this sacred space, to rest in the presence of our Lord, and to be renewed by the holy mysteries of His Church.
