Creative Writing Workshop: Unease - Writing to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.... With the dark nights approaching and the season of ghost stories round the fire, we present a guided writing event for writers at any level of experience, led by local creative writing tutor Jane Cartridge. We will explore what makes us uneasy and why we enjoy these feelings, and discover ways to translate that unease effectively into our writing. Tickets £7.38, to include light refreshments. Places are limited so book online today - visit www.eventbrite.co.uk and search 'Elsdon creative writing'.
Idle Women – National Service on England’s waterways during a time of war Emma Anderson’s illustrated talk presents the little-known history of the remarkable Second World War women who, instead of choosing factory work or joining up, elected to train as cargo-carrying boaters to ferry loads of steel and coal up and down the cut. Their number included artists, actresses, teachers, mothers and a debutante, and they were, of course, anything but idle (an appellation derived from the initials IW - for Inland Waterways - on their badges). Come along to find out about their long working days and harsh living conditions, and how they saw out the war and gained the respect of the boating community. Tickets £5 on the door, to include light refreshments. Don’t forget to bring a jumper!
