Idle Women – National Service on England’s waterways during a time of war
Emma Anderson’s illustrated talk presents the little-known history of the remarkable Second World War women who, instead of choosing factory work or joining up, elected to train as cargo-carrying boaters to ferry loads of steel and coal up and down the cut.  Their number included artists, actresses, teachers, mothers and a debutante, and they were, of course, anything but idle (an appellation derived from the initials IW - for Inland Waterways - on their badges).  Come along to find out about their long working days and harsh living conditions, and how they saw out the war and gained the respect of the boating community.  Tickets £5 on the door, to include light refreshments. Don’t forget to bring a jumper!
