Elsdon: St Cuthbert
Newcastle
St Cuthbert's Elsdon is open to visitors every day (usually 9am-5pm) as a quiet place for contemplation, prayer and exploration. The church has a rich history, details of which can be found as you go around the church. The oldest stone is from Roman times, with Saxon burial stones, medieval building works and Victorian alterations creating a complex building that speaks of the long Christian history of this area.
All are very welcome to join our communion service at 6pm on the first Sunday of every month.

Horsley: Holy Trinity
Newcastle
“Built in the Neo-Norman style by John & Benjamin Green in 1844. The original pine furniture was replaced in 1895 with oak fittings in memory of the original patron, the 2nd Lord Redesdale. The organ gallery was added in 2000 and a fine organ was imported from the redundant Methodist Chapel in Tow Law, Co.Durham, and has been lovingly restored. There is a Roman altar in the porch.”
We regret that the church is closed at present for repair work. We anticipate reopening once pandemic conditions allow. Everyone is welcome to join the zoom worship at 10.00 am each Sunday - for a link, including the option of phone, e-mail [email protected]

Byrness: St Francis
Newcastle
“Built in 1793 and consecrated three years later, St Francis church was at one time the smallest parish church in the diocese of Newcastle. The stained glass window, installed in the south wall in 1903 commemorates those of the community who died during the period of construction of the nearby Catcleugh Reservoir and was paid for by their fellow workers. It is reputedly the only such window to include the depiction of a narrow gauge railway.”
We apologise that it is not possible to go into the church at present because the floor on the north side is unsafe due to rot. We are working to raise the funds to do a 'like for like' restoration of the woodwork on that side, after which the church will reopen for private prayer. If you are able to contribute, so that we can begin to use the church again soon, and start to gather funds for the south side, which will need doing next, please contact Revd Elaine Ryder ([email protected]) for details of the account, or donate from this site and let us know it is for this work. Services are held by zoom for the team area, at 10.00 am each Sunday - e-mail Elaine if you would like a link to the service.
