Away Banns

This page is under construction... please return another time to see more information.

In the meantime, if you would like to arrange your Away Banns - please contact the Team Administrator here

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptuals!

If you are marrying in a Church of England church away from where you live, you must have your banns read in two places: the church where the wedding is taking place and the parish church where you live.  We can help you with this.

WHAT ARE BANNS

  • A minister will read the names of the couple getting married out loud to the congregation on a Sunday morning at your local church (in the parish where you live).
  • They will be read on three separate Sundays - no sooner than 3 months before your wedding
  • They are read to check if anyone knows a reason why the marriage is not lawful (for example an existing marriage)
  • If no objections have been raised the certificate is completed and is available to you once the third reading has been made.
  • If any objections are raised the minister will discuss this with you personally.

FEES

To have your away banns read at one of our churches it will currently cost  Payable before any of the banns are read.  This standard fee is set by the Church of England and is revised every year in January.

PROCESS

If you are marrying away and your local church is one of ours (to check this click here) please notify us as soon as possible that you need your banns to be read (but at least 5 weeks prior to your wedding!).

  1. Please contact us with the date of your wedding, where your wedding will be and your home address.  To do this, contact out Team Administrator here
  2. We will acknowledge your request and you will be sent a form to complete and return (Application of Banns) - a copy of which is at the bottom of this page in case you would like to fill it in and send it to us now.
  3. The minister will decide when your banns can be read and you will be notified of this.  If the minister has any queries they will reach out to you directly.
  4. You will be invited to attend one or all of the services where your banns are being read (not compulsery)
  5. You will be sent an invoice, which must be paid for before the banns have started to be read
  6. Once the third reading of your banns has taken place the certificate can be collected at the time of the last reading or at another time from the Team Administrator, in the Parish Office:  Church Lane (All Saints Churchyard), Westbury, Wiltshire, BA13 3DA
