Church of England Diocese of Durham Belmont

Children and Young People

Children and young people are very important to us. We firmly believe that they are full members of the church of the present, not just of the future.

During services, children are welcome either to stay with carers in church or to join our crèche or Junior church. We love crying babies, and toddlers running around and can promise you that no one will frown at you! Breastfeeding is welcomed.

There are a variety of activities and opportunities for young people and children at St Mary Magdalene’s:

Junior Church:

Junior Church (our Sunday School) takes place on Sunday for children and young people during the 10.30am service.

The children start the service in the church and then go to into the Narthex for their activities, joining the remainder of the congregation back in church for communion midway through the service.<div>

Messy Church:

Messy Church meets on the first Sunday of the month between 3pm - 5pm. All families are welcome for a time of crafts and games, worship in church followed by food. Messy Church is currently not running because of Covid-19 restrictions

Scouts and Guides:

St Mary Magdalene’s is closely related to Guide and Scout groups in Belmont. All of them meet in Belmont Parish Hall. There are regular Parade services at festivals throughout the year. Children of all faiths and none are welcome to join these organisations.

Please see here for individual group times/days and more information:

Connections with schools:

We have good links with schools in the area, and are particularly closely linked with Belmont C of E Primary School, where the Vicar and other members of the congregation are school governors.

Schools hold termly services in the church and the Vicar and other church members regularly take assemblies. We are always happy to contribute to RE lessons and welcome visits from schools to the church.
