Margate Civic Society

‘The love of our town leads us’

What is the Margate Civic Society?

Founded in 1968, Margate Civic Society is a registered charity (No 257884). It is a founder member of Civic Voice.

The Society's purpose and aims are to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Margate and its environs; to stimulate public interest and care for the history and character of the area; and to encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general amenity and historical interest.

We hold evening meetings in March, April, May (which is when we hold our Town Pride Awards), June, July, September and October (which is also our AGM). Talks by guest speakers are organised on various topics of interest. A programme of historic walks is organised and conducted by Vice-President Robin Colyer. We also produce a quarterly newsletter and take an active role in reviewing and, where appropriate, responding to planning applications and have a good working relationship with Thanet District Council in helping to improve the character and appearance of the area.
