2024 Annual report for All Saints Church, Cadney

Once again All Saints, Cadney PCC has had a busy year.

We have a small but busy PCC of three members, Debbie Clark, Churchwarden, Kerry Spence, secretary and Pam Burbidge, treasurer. Dawn Delaney was also a PCC member until August 2023.

CHURCH OPEN . The church is open everyday from around 9am to 5pm, there are tealights for visitors to light a candle, and have prayers or moments of reflection, book shelves where they can pick a book, usually chutney for sale, and they can just come in to look around and enjoy the church, we often get lovely comments left in the visitor’s book, and they often say that they love that the church is open.

CHURCH SERVICES . With the help of Keith Simpson, we managed to hold a monthly service every month except January. Following a discussion with Fr David Rowett, we have moved to having our monthly service to the first Sunday of the month instead of the third Sunday which means we don’t clash with Wrawby’s C of E service. We also had a communion service on any months that had a fifth Sunday with Fr David doing these services for us.

The Harvest Festival was held on Sunday 1st of October, we kept the service at 11am and invited people to join us for homemade soup in the church hall afterwards. This was quite poorly attended compared with other years, but there didn’t seem to be particular reason for this.

Our annual Christingle service was held on Sunday 17th December, Rural Dean Liz Brown led the service which was quite well attended, but it has been busier on other years. In the past it has been held on Christmas Eve on very close to it, which was always popular.

Our Easter Sunday service was particularly popular this year, and it wonderful to have a full church congregation, and many people came early and enjoyed Hot Cross Buns and refreshments in the church hall first.

CONCERTS . We successfully applied for a grant from North Lincs Council for £250 and put on a free concert to celebrate the Kings Coronation, held on the eve of the coronation, it was lovely to have a full church and the band were very popular. When the opportunity arose to apply for a grant for this year to hold a concert to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D Day, I applied again, and we have once again been successful. We have been granted £250, Barnetby Silver Band has been booked once again, they charge £350. To bridge the shortfall, there will a collection plate left out, plus refreshments and a raffle in the church hall during the mid time break.

GRANTS . I applied for a grant towards to grass cutting costs from Cadney cum Howsham Parish council, and this was rejected, we were told they had been advised that they could not fund anything to do with churches. Through the Diocese Church buildings team newsletter I found that the legislation we had been quoted as been amended and we should be able to apply for help once again at the end of this year, ready for grass cutting in 2025. With the help of Julie Reed, we successfully applied for a grant from North Lincolnshire Council’s Community Pot fund. The grant was to get Cadney Church Hall reroofed, and new blinds at the windows, we had to contribute 10%, when the old roof was removed it was found to have no insulation, and we all agreed to pay extra to get insulation put under the roof while we could.

OTHER EVENTS . Last summer we as well as the King’s Coronation concert with Barnetby Silver Band , we also held our first Hymns and Pimms event, Geoffrey Brown played the keyboard, we asked people to nominate their favourite hymn, and give the reason why. This was well attended, we had Pimms and cake available before and during the break and it was very popular. We agreed to repeat this event this year, as it was popular and quite easy to organise. The Great Cadney Cake Off , was held in July last year, we had some great entries, from adults and children, Dawn Delaney offered to donate cups and prizes and judged the entries with her friend. In the afternoon Cadney Church Hall is reopened for refreshments and the cakes to be auctioned. This was really popular and the ‘star baker’ cake was sold for about £20. This is to be repeated again in July with Dawn and Margaret offering to judge the entries. We tried doing Teddy Bear parachuting from the church tower in August. It went very well, we charged £2 per go, and had cake and refreshments in the church hall. It was a popular event and we plan to repeat it and build on the success of the previous event. Cadney Coffee mornings run on a Monday morning between 10.30 to 12. Gwen Harlow runs this for us, and often has others who come along who help out too. It ran from April to the end of September last year. This year Gwen suggested that we waited until May until it restarted as it is always more popular when the weather is good, as visitors particularly enjoy sitting outside. It not only brings in some extra income, but also brings people together from Cadney, Howsham and further afield. During the summer holidays last year I ran some family activity afternoons on a Monday afternoon at Cadney Church Hall, we named it ‘Mondays are Fundays’ and had a different theme each week. I had different adults help each week, but children had to be accompanied by a responsible adult. We started with ‘biscuit week’, which coincided with The Great Cadney Cake Off being the following Saturday, so children could bake and decorate biscuits, and then if they wished keep them to enter into the children’s category of the Cake Off.

CHURCH HALL USE . As well as the church hall being used for the coffee mornings, and for refreshments alongside church events, the church hall is booked by North Lincs Council whenever there is an election of any sort, this earns £120 each time, plus from late August 2023, Cadney Sewing Bee started, run by Gwen Harlow, as well as the church hall being used more, it also brings in extra income. Gwen and another sewing bee lady made a new altar front for advent and Christmas, and a lady who regularly comes to the coffee mornings gave a knitted set of Nativity characters to complement the new altar front.

EXTRA FUNDRAISERS . Dee from Cadney had the idea of doing some car boot sales and donated any money she raised to church funds. Pam and Dee then set up a ‘table top sale’ table in the church hall and items for sale were left on the table for visitors to buy with a honesty box on the table. Margaret from Cadney donated some of her lovely hand made cards , which were also left in Cadney Church Hall to sell, she gave extra cards to sell in the run up to Christmas . ‘It’s about time’ was a fundraiser suggested from Churchwarden’s Facebook page, the idea to sell all the minutes in a 12 hour period for £1 a minute, we sold over 600 minutes. An old pocket watch was set at 12 o’clock, wound up and left for a week, the time it stopped on was the winning minute. We also have pens, magnets and bookmarks in the church hall, with money going to church funds. 100 miles in 10 days , I was asked to do something that could get sponsored, I was already doing the walk 1000 miles challenge, and did 10 days of walking 10 miles a day, and writing about it, in a bid to boost sponsorship , from this Radio Humberside did a phone call interview, and then Amanda White from Radio Humberside visited Cadney Coffee morning and did live interviews for the radio from Cadney. During the summer I contacted Fiona Duncan who paints scenes onto vintage maps which are they sold as prints and cards. I told Fiona about our fundraising and she agreed to do a painting of Cadney Church on a vintage map of the local area. We get 75p from every card sold and £7 from every print sold for church funds. So far we have sold dozens of cards, but only one print, the cards are available to buy in Cadney church hall.

SAFEGUARDING (Debbie Clark, Parish Safeguarding Officer). The Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the legal responsibility to adopt, implement and monitor the safeguarding policies, however everyone who participates in the life of the church has a role to play in promoting a safer church for all. The PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have due regard to House of Bishops' guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults). There have been no concerns or safeguarding issues in the past year.

DEANERY SYNOD REP . Although I, Debbie Clark has not formally been the Deanery Synod rep, I have attended several Deanery Synod meetings in the past year to represent All Saints Church, Cadney, find out more about TTCT and the progress of getting an incumbent for our group of churches.

EXTRAS . Following a kind donation of £2000 from a local lady for the maintenance and repair of the church, quotes were got for the repair of stonework to a window in the lady chapel that had eroded and to the door arch into the church. Paul Booth gave the best quote and when I rang at the start of the summer holidays, he offered to come the next week, and his workers did a fantastic job, but I had not filled in the list B form, when I tried to do this retrospectively, I had to register and we have had to pay for a faculty. Lesson learnt. Trees in the ‘new’ churchyard. After a Cadney resident reported she thought some trees were unsafe we agreed to get a tree report done, Watson Lindsey Arboricultural did a report and Kerry has found someone to do the work. A List B application needs to be done once the exact trees to have work done have been identified. Grass cutting , the old churchyard around the church is now closed and North Lincs Council keep it cut at no costs to the PCC, but the new churchyard has to be maintained by the PCC, as mentioned earlier, we have usually received a grant from the parish council to cover most of the costs, but last year we didn’t get anything, then our usual contractor told Kerry that due to ill health, we wouldn’t be doing the work this year. Kerry has worked hard contacting various local contractors, but none have come close to being able to matching the previous contractors prices or length of time between cuts. Church Roof, it is now two years since the lead was stolen from the church roof. Although it has been given temporary repair, after heavy rain, water is coming in. This is one of our main concerns as we want the church to be watertight and not to spoil carpets and furnishings inside the church. We have a wedding booked for June 15th, the first in the church for several years.
