Viking Way extra No. 2 - walking back to the start. Barnetby to Barton
Walking back to the start. Barnetby to Barton on the #VikingWayFive lovely ladies started the day at St Barnabas Church Hall car park in Barnetby. The car park was full, and when we talked to the people there, they were going to make a film, something to do with flat-earthers.We got a photo outside Barnetby church, then walked up the road to join the Viking Way. There are loads of great flower planters all through Barnetby and there is a Viking Way themed planter, showing it is 14 one way and 135 miles the other way. At the top of the road, it was good to see the first of the Viking Way symbols, we made our way along side the roundabout footpaths until we spot a marker and join a quieter path, you could still hear the motorway in the background, but you were away from the traffic. Today, we have walked alongside field sides and quiet lanes for a short time, by a busier road, on a bridge over a dual carriageway, and along lots of lovely footpaths. We got a glimpse of our destination, the Humber Bridge, from quite a few miles away, and sometimes it was in sight, sometimes we seemed to be walking away from it, but we kept steadily making progress while we all chatted and walked. You don’t walk through many villages, on this section, after Barnetby, the next village is South Ferriby, when we did reach South Ferriby we headed to the village shop, it has a café area on one side. The shop owner was kind enough to let us all have a sit down, a couple of us bought sandwiches, and we shared a multi pack of Cornettos between us. The break was very welcome. After we finished there, we made our way to follow the riverside path for a while, we followed the path, with the Humber Bridge looming larger, and we were very happy to pass underneath. It was too late to enjoy a cuppa at the Viking Way Café, which marks the start of the Viking way. A man walking his dog was asked if he would take a photo of us all under the sign saying it is the start of the Viking way and he was happy to help out. Gwen and Sandra who walked with us today, are both septuagenarians and did brilliantly today. They both said they felt quite proud of themselves when they finished the walk, and so they should. They managed more than some people half their age could manage. It was good it wasn’t quite so hot today, as it made it easier for walking. We had another good day of walking and talking while on the Viking Way, and I have now walked all of it from Barton to Fiskerton.
