Music at Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity has enjoyed a fine reputation for music since its early days. On a Sunday that means a small professional choir, a large organ, and the sound of both in a building made to carry it. Max Barley is Director of Music, Makoto James is Organist, and Michael Brough is Honorary Assistant Organist.

The Holy Trinity Choir leads our Sunday Mass and the great feasts of the year. It is a small professional ensemble of four singers, joined twice a month by four Choral Scholars.

The Evensong Choir sings around six Evensongs a term. It is an able group of those who love singing Evensong, drawn from both the church community and outside. Those who have recently (or not so recently) left university and are looking to revive their Evensong days are warmly welcome. Please email Max, Director of Music, at [email protected].

Visiting choirs are warmly welcome to sing Evensong on Sunday evenings when our own choirs are not. If you direct a choir and would like to sing here, do get in touch, and please send a recent recording.

The Children's Choir is open to children aged six to thirteen. It is free, and no experience is needed. It rehearses on Tuesdays at 4pm for forty-five minutes. New singers are always welcome. Come along to a Tuesday rehearsal, or email [email protected] first if you would prefer.

Songs and Soup is our weekly singing lunch, open to everyone. There is no audition and no need to read music. It meets in the Parish Room at 1pm on Tuesdays, lasts about forty-five minutes, and it is free. It is as much about company as it is about music, and new faces are always welcome.

The organ began as a Walker instrument of 1891. In 2012, paid for by Lord Cadogan, Harrison and Harrison rebuilt it, keeping the old Walker pipes at its heart. It now has seventy-one stops and around four thousand two hundred pipes. Edwin Lemare and Sir Walter Alcock played here, and the composer John Ireland was sub-organist in 1896.

The best way to know our choirs is to hear them. You would be very welcome at any service.
