St John’s is proud to have a Harrison and Harrison organ dating from 1908. Organs made by this Durham based company are renowned for their ‘sturdy workmanship and colourful musical quality’. Our organ is in good company, others can be found in Durham Cathedral, the Albert Hall and King’s College Cambridge. Whilst not quite in the same league, our organ is well loved and is crucial in providing moving and memorable music for our worship and life events for our community at weddings, baptisms and funerals. Unfortunately the roof of the chamber housing the organ needs urgent repairs. Rain water is seeping through the tiles, grouting and flashing. This has affected the organ but thankfully it is insured. Urgent repairs in the order of £40,000 are needed to make good the chamber. So far we have benefited from grants from the Northumbria Historic Churches Trust and Allchurches Trust, we can use some of our reserves but we also need to raise funds locally. If you feel this is something you can support, please donate using our online facility on our home page. Thank you in advance.

Previously, our priest, Matthew, had shared services and experiences since the closure of the church during the Coronavirus pandemic on his customised YouTube channel: MGH No Fixed Abode. From Sunday 28th June 2020, our weekly Service of the Word, with parish participation, and music was posted to our own church YouTube channel: St John's, Whorlton. Now that we're back in Church on Sunday mornings, this service has been discontinued, but we wanted to ensure ongoing online content, so each week we're uploading a Simple Evensong (available at 3pm on Sundays). You can access this by clicking here. [Recordings paused after Bible Sunday to allow the choir to concentrate on Christmas music - details of seasonal services to follow.]We're now hosting a Friday morning programme via Zoom:9:30 Morning Prayer10:00 Bible Studypriest@stjohnswhorlton.co.uk
