Baptism and Christening

We would be delighted to talk to you about having your child baptised at St. Margaret's Church. This page tries to answer some of the questions you may have.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions

Can my child be baptised/christened at St. Margaret’s?

Everyone living in England has a right to baptism, no matter what their circumstances. It is normally done in your own parish so if you live in South Wonston or are a member of St. Margaret’s, your child can be baptised at St. Margaret’s. If not, we can put you in touch with your local church.

When will the service be?

Baptisms are usually on a Sunday afternoon, but they can be held at other times by agreement with the priest.

Who can be godparents?

Godparents will make promises with the parents on behalf of the child, so they should be adults and should all have been baptised. They should be people who will be able to encourage and support your child as they grow up, and especially as they learn more about God.

What if I don't usually go to church?

When you bring a child for baptism you promise to bring them up as a Christian within the family of the church. We will explain the promises you will make, but the decision will be up to you. If after discussion you feel unable to make these promises, you may still like to have a service of celebration and thanksgiving for the birth of your child instead of a baptism. Please ask about this if you are interested.

What if we are not married, or are divorced or a one parent family?

We understand that families come in all shapes and sizes. We try not to judge or discriminate, we are honoured that you want to be with us on this important day in the life of your child.

Can we take photos?

Yes, please do bring cameras to take pictures after the service. We will be happy to pose by the font!

How much does it cost?

Baptism is free: we are delighted to welcome your child into the family of God and we do not expect any payment. If you want to make a donation to the work of St. Margaret’s then we would be very grateful but that is entirely up to you.
