Church Choir and Organ

A small choir and Organ or Piano leads the Sunday morning worship for the congregational singing of traditional hymns and modern worship songs.

St. Paul's church has a long standing tradition of choral music. At the service of Choral Evensong held every fourth Sunday in the month at 6.30pm, the choir aims to keep alive the very best of church choral music, performing works by Stanford, Vaughan Williams and many others. Under the direction of Christopher Cotton from saint Thomas Church, Heaton Chapel this choir has about fifteen singers from St Paul's and other nearby churches, singing in four parts for male and female voices.

On the Sunday evening before Christmas we hold our traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. There are the standard nine bible reading interspersed wiith Christmas Carols sung by the whole congregation and Choir Anthems. This is well attended service when the the birth of our Saviour is celebrated.

We at St Paul's welcome new choir members to sing with us and contribute to the worship at St Paul's church at the Sunday morning services, and the monthly Choral Evensong.

The Organ has three 61 note manuals and a 32 note pedalboard.

The builder of the original instrument in the church is thought to be Lewis, a noted London organ builder.

When, in 1902 it was felt that the scope of the instrument was insufficient, it was completely re-built by Benson of Manchester who enlarged it by the addition of the Choir organ.

In 1955, it was completely re-built and modernised by Messrs J W Walker & Sons.

In 1989 a complete overhaul was carried out including a new solid state action system being installed - the combination action being replaced by an adjustable capture system with eight memories. In recent years all of the drawstop solenoids have been replaced to give instant response.

The organ is tuned four times a year and is regarded as one of the finest organs in South Manchester.

St. Paul's hosts at least one Organ Recital Evening each year, arranged by the Manchester Organists Association.
