If you are marrying in a Church of England church away from where you live, you must have your banns read in two places: the church where the wedding is taking place (the wedding church) and the parish church where you reside (the local church).

REQUIREMENTS

  • Legal connection: You must prove a qualifying connection to the wedding church, such as having lived there previously, attending worship there, or having family links.
  • Dual reading: Contact both your local church and the wedding church to arrange the reading of the banns.
  • The home certificate: After your banns are read for three Sundays at your local parish church, you must collect the banns certificate and give it to the wedding church before the ceremony.

FEES

To have your banns read at one of our churches it will cost ?  Payable before any of the banns are read.

WHAT ARE BANNS

  • A minister will read the names of the couple out loud to the congregation on a Sunday morning at your local church.
  • They wil be read out on three separate Sundays before the wedding day
  • They are read to check if anyone knows a reason the marriage is not lawful (like an existing marriage)
  • If no objections have been raised the certificate is then completed and is available after the last reading has taken place

PROCESS

If you are marrying away and need to have your banns read at one of our four churches you will need to:

  • Notify us at least 5 weeks prior to your wedding by contacting our Team Administrator (details below)
  • Provide the administrator with your connection to our church (you live in the town, you used to, etc) and the date of your wedding.
  • The Team Administrator will acknowledge your request and will send you some questions
  • Once you have replied to these you will be sent a form to complete and return (Application of Banns)
  • The Team Rector will then decide when the banns can be read and you will be notified of this
  • You will be sent an invoice which will need to be paid for before the banns have started to be read
  • You will be invited to attend one or all of the services where your banns are being read (not compulsery)
  • Once the third reading of your banns has been completed the certificate can be collected.
