Hymns & Music for 6th June recorded by Mel, St. Paul's Church Organist

Mel, St. Paul's Church Organist, writes:

After Whit Sunday, we returned that period known as "Ordinary time", that long list of Sundays, sometimes counted as 'after Pentecost' ( = Whit Sunday) or sometimes counted as 'after Trinity', and just to prevent things seeming too simple we also have numbers for the Propers! Of course Ordinary time gets peppered with special days that sometimes pass un-noticed but one this week is an occasion in many places for colourful celebrations. Corpus Christi, literally "the body of Christ", was devised in the 13th century by St Thomas Aquinas as a time to mark Christ's sacrifice for all Christians and which we celebrate still in our Communion services. It has had a turbulent history with the Reformation at times banishing it because of its association with Roman Catholic beliefs, veneration of the sacrament displayed in monstrances and issues that can leave low church Anglicans feeling uneasy. However, it keeps its place in the Church of England calendar labelled as "The Day of Thanksgiving for the Institution of Holy Communion (Corpus Christi)". While we might not have the colourful displays such as carpets of flower petals and spectacular street processions seen in Latin countries, I have used this time to add several hymns on the communion theme.

Our Sunday lectionary has separate themes and so makes this week one for a total of eight items newly added to the hymn archive.
